Artist Statement

Elena Roché

Creating is what I do best.  I received academic training in fine art while specializing in embroidery and fashion design at the Moscow College of Arts and Traditional Crafts in Russia.  Regardless of one's specialty, all students were uniformly trained in academic drawing, painting, composition, and graphic design.  We were taught how to see like an artist, how to think like an artist and how to be an artist open to all varieties of artistic expression.  After immigrating to the US in 1997, and with the full support of my husband, I have started two major projects in my life: the first, raising a family and the second, an art career.  I now have five children whom my husband and I are homeschooling and my art is gaining in popularity and recognition.  I am often asked how I can find the time to paint with five children?  I always reply that if you really want to do something, you will find the time.  The truth is that if I don't create something in a week I feel unsettled.

My family is part of my art and my art is part of my family.  When I paint, my children are often near me and the oldest ones paint with me.  My studio is on the grounds of my home, El Refugio, which borders Topanga State Park in the Santa Monica Mountains.

I work in Oil, Watercolor, Pastel, Colored Pencil, Charcoal and Graphite Pencil.  I paint flowers, still life, portraits, architecture, animals, plein air landscapes, seascapes and marine subjects.  I take portrait commissions, pet portrait and house/architectural portrait commissions.  I have continued to design clothing and feature many of my creations in the portraits of my own children.

In my mountain redoubt, I paint virtually all of my floral watercolors and some still life from subjects in my own garden.  Most of my landscapes are painted from scenes near my home or nearby locations in the Santa Monica Mountains and seashore.  Because of the mild and predictable Southern California weather, flowers are available year-round.  Most landscapes and florals are painted en plein air, i.e. outdoors on site.  Portrait commissions, architectural portrait commissions and still life  are painted indoors in the Studio.

In my paintings I share the beauty that surrounds me and the beauty within me with you.
