The Allied Artists of the Santa Monica Mountains and Seashore is a group of artists working to promote the beauty and conservation of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area through monthly paint-outs or en plein air events, art exhibits and art shows. Our volunteer members represent the greater Los Angeles area including Malibu, Topanga, Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica, Thousand Oaks, Westlake and the Conejo Valley, Burbank, Glendale and the San Fernando Valley. Allied Artists' monthly paint-outs or en plein air events attract artists and outdoor enthusiasts from all over the country.

Our MissionThe Allied Artists of the Santa Monica Mountains and Seashore work with artists, environmentalists, park agencies and volunteer groups with a mission to promote the beauty and conservation of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Our volunteer members represent the greater Los Angeles area including Malibu, Topanga, Pacific Palisades, Thousand Oaks and the Conejo Valley, San Fernando Valley and Glendale.Allied Artists’ special events and programs generate funds which are donated to appropriate conservation groups. Recipients of Allied Artists Charitable Contributions Program include the Mountains Conservancy Foundation, Charmlee Nature Preserve Foundation, California Native Plant Society, Mountains Education and the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council.Our most popular activities are monthly “paint-outs” held in the mountain parks and beaches throughout the Santa Monica Mountains and even the Channel Islands. Participants meet other artists of all mediums, informally critique works in progress, and find new sources for inspiration.With the Community Partnership Program, Allied Artists work with local businesses and organizations to exhibit juried art. The displayed art enhances and piques the public's interest in knowing more about the natural beauty found in the greater Los Angeles area. Receptions promote the participating businesses and Allied Artists to the public. All art is for sale, and artists donate 20% of all sales to the Allied Artists’ Charitable Contribution Program. Community Partners have included Moss and Companies’ Point Dume Plaza, Grey Whale Restaurant and Shapiro and Dupont, LLP.Other Allied Artists activities include outdoor exhibits in public parks, sidewalk exhibits, a group booth at the Malibu Art Festival and other special events and trips.The original Allied Artists group was formed in 1990 from many existing organized art groups in West Los Angeles, Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Thousand Oaks, San Fernando Valley and other cities surrounding the Santa Monica Mountains with the help of the non-profit Mountains Conservancy Foundation, the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and the California State Park. Together, this coalition organized a grand exhibit in May, 1991 at Peter Strauss Ranch called Celebrating the Santa Monica Mountains. Artists contributed over 300 paintings for the juried show that was seen by hundreds of visitors.

Scrol for PAINT-OUT SCHEDULE AND DIRECTIONS9:30 A.M. to 1 P.M.Paint-outs are great ways to meet other artists and discover new sites for inspiration. The board chose new sites, interesting historic parks and old favorites for each year's schedule. Unless otherwise noted, we meet on the second Saturday of the month at 9:30 a.m. and paint until about 1:00 p.m. Bring your own art supplies, water, lunch, sunscreen and repellent, hat and walking shoes. We meet in the parking area, except when indicated. If crowded, I’ll carry a red flag. We may be too early for the wildflowers, but the normally dry-wash creek may have some water from winter rains. A fascinating site for artists - with breathtaking panoramas for the hardy hikers. To get there, take Topanga Canyon Road to Old Topanga Canyon Road, near Topanga Town Center. Go about two miles to Red Rock Canyon Road.Turn left on road that winds past houses, paved at the beginning, then dirt. About 1/2 mile after paved surface ends, look for sign saying" Parking for Conservancy." Restrooms. Carpool if possible. Limited parking.FEBRUARY 11 - LEO CARILLO BEACH, 232OO Pacific Coast Highway, MalibuOur seaside inspirations include huge rock formations, shoreline views, the crashing surf on the rocks below and the lifeguard stations standing sentinel over the vast Pacific. Facing inland, we can view the mountain vistas and thick groves of sycamores. We will meet in the large parking lot to the left of the Ranger Station entrance. Look for the RED FLAG,. Take PCH west of Kanan Road, a few miles past Trancas, until you see Park Entrance on your right. Parking fee. Facilities. Rain Cancels.MARCH 10 - MALIBU CREEK STATE PARK, 1925 Las Virgenes Road, CalabasasValley and Coast Live Oaks provide shaded corridors to paint under, while we inhale the scent of California sagebrush and purple sage. Mountain vistas, vast meadows, Malibu creek and Eucalyptus stands await our artistic interpretation. From 101 Freeway, exit Las Virgenes road. Go 3 miles south, past Mulholland Hwy intersection to Park Entrance on right. From PCH, go north on Malibu Canyon Road to Park Entrance on left.APRIL 14 - POINT DUME HEADLANDS, 7200 Westward Beach Road, MalibuPaint Point Dume from the beach or hike up to the headlands and see the remaining displays of coreopsis in bloom against a backdrop of the Santa Monica Bay or facing opposite, Westward and Zuma beaches. From PCH, drive west past Kanan Road to Westward Beach Road. Turn left onto Westward Beach Rd and proceed to farthest parking area closest to Point Dume. Facilities. Fee.MAY 12 - CHARMLEE REGIONAL PARK, 2577 S. Encinal Canyon Road, MalibuRun by the city of Malibu, this open space park is located high in the Santa Monica Mountains with sweeping ocean views and lovely trails across expansive meadows. An artist's haunt, Charmlee is perfect this time of year. Take Pacific Coast Highway west of Kanan Road, past Trancus. Turn right on Encinal Canyon Road and drive up the mountain to the park entrance on your left. Facilities. Fee. MAY 12 - CHARMLEE REGIONAL PARK, 2577 S. Encinal Canyon Road, MalibuRun by the city of Malibu, this open space park is located high in the Santa Monica Mountains with sweeping ocean views and lovely trails across expansive meadows. Fee.June 9 - WILL ROGERS STATE HISTORICAL PARK, 1501 Will Rogers State Park Rd., Pacific PalisadesAfter our successful 2011 art show here celebrating Will Rogers birthday, we are glad to be back to discover new sites or revist the recently renovated ranch house, the eucalyptus lined paths around the stables, the higher trails with Pacific Ocean vistas and overviews of the polo grounds. From PCH, take Sunset Blvd., 5 miles inland to entrance sign on left side of the road. Facilities. Fees.JULY 14 - SANTA MONICA PALISADES PARK, Santa MonicaFrom here we can see forever: sweeping views up and down the coastline. Overlooking PCH, we look down on the Santa Monica beaches and the SM Pier or turn around and paint the Palisades Park. We will meet at the Northwest end of the park, where San Vicente Blvd ends at Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica. Look for the Red Flag. Street parking. (Bring quarters). Facilities.AUGUST 11 - SOLSTICE CANYON, 3500 Corral Canyon Road, MalibuSolstice is a summer favorite because of the beautiful shade trees: sycamores, elders, bay and oak line a spring-fed creek with a wooden bridge about a 1/4 mile along the path. Worth the trip. Take Pacific Coast Highway west of Malibu Canyon Road. Turn north on Corral Canyon Road (look for 76 Station.) About 100 yards up at first bend, look for Park Entrance on left and proceed to upper parking lot where we will meet. Facilities.SEPTEMBER 8 - EL MATADOR STATE BEACH, 32350 Pacific Coast Highway, MalibuBeat the heat at this small pocket beach, the most dramatic of several west of Zuma. Hike down to the beach for an up close and personal view of the waves and stunning rock formations or capture them from a landing halfway up or from the bluffs on top. Drive Pacific Coast Highway west of Kanan, past Trancas and look for the El Matador entrance on left. POTLUCK LUNCH. Join us for a Potluck Lunch after painting and share food and conversation with fellow artists. Portable toilets. Fee.OCTOBER 13 - SOKA/KING GILLETTE RANCH, CalabasasNow a public park, this historic property was once a ranch, home to a religious sect and a college campus. A stately eucalyptus-lined park entrance, mountain vistas, oak groves, a Mediterranean estate and picturesque pond provide unlimited painting opportunities for both beginning and seasoned artists (salt and pepper hair). Park entrance is on Mulholland, 0.1 south of the intersection of Malibu Canyon Rd/Las Virgenes Rd and Mulholland. Meet at first parking lot on right. Fee. Facilities.NOVEMBER 10 - PETER STRAUSS RANCH, 3000 Mulholland, AgouraOur annual autumnal pilgrimage here is in search of one of the Santa Monicas' special fall treats: the turning sycamore leaves in naples yellow and a fall foliage display in cad red and orange, burnt sienna and more. From the parking lot or the drywash creek are views of Paramount Peak and distant mountains. Take Kanan Road from either the Ventura 101 or from PCH. Turn east on Troutdale Rd. At the Mulholland intersection, turn left and look for parking on your right. Facilities at ranchhouse.DECEMBER 8 - CASTRO CREST, MalibuUnique and colorful rock formations, with overviews of the area, make this a remarkable and memorable site. Take Pacific Coast Hwy to Corral Canyon Rd (west of Malibu Canyon Road-look for 76 Station). Follow Corral Canyon Road to the top where it ends at parking lot.

NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2011 MALIBU NATURE PRESERVE EXHIBITOur 9th annual show at the Nature Preserve was a gray but fun day with twenty-two artists participating. Thirteen artists sold work and Allied Artists will be donating $800.00 to the Preserve from these sales.WILL ROGERS EXHIBITOur first show at Will Rogers Historic State Park will be on Saturday, November 5 from 10am-5pm. Even if you are not able to participate, please come and visit! It’s a beautiful venue and you can hike some of the trails as well as enjoy the work of your fellow artists. Parking fee is $12.EXHIBIT CHANGE AT ATTORNEYS’ OFFICEThe change date for this ongoing exhibit is on Saturday, January 21, from 10 to 12 noon. The Reception date has not yet been determined.All members are invited to submit paintings on that day. The paintings will be on display in the law offices for approximately 6 months. All of the usual requirements apply regarding subject matter and framing. All entries will be juried.
